Pretty in pink: New balls revealed for AFLX

The one-night 2019 AFLX tournament will feature pink footballs

A PINK Sherrin will be used in this year’s AFLX competition, replacing the silver balls that were trialled last season.

The AFL unveiled its specially designed balls for the competition on Thursday night, with pink chosen to avoid clashes with the colours of the four teams that will take part in the tournament next month at Marvel Stadium.

The ball will have silver reflective writing as a throwback to the first AFLX season, when the opening games were played with a fully silver Sherrin.

However that experiment was short-lived last year, with the AFL reverting to yellow balls for the remainder of the AFLX competition following complaints the silver Sherrins were too difficult to see at night given their darker shade.

The AFL was keen to use the pink-coloured Sherrin for the one-night tournament on Friday, February 22 to differentiate AFLX from the traditional format.

Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield, Adelaide’s Eddie Betts, Fremantle’s Nat Fyfe and Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt will captain the four teams competing in the contest, with each club to select players from around the League to make up their sides.

The AFLX draft is expected to be held in early February.
