It was a great weekend for punters who heavily backed almost every winning team in both head-to-head betting and at the line. Richmond and Essendon, in particular, proved to be quite fruitful for punters with some big bets on both teams. Some of the bigger bets on the Tigers include: $87,000 at $1.95 (Sportsbet.com.au), $50,000 at $1.88 (Betstar) and $55,000 at $1.90 (Centrebet). Betstar reported that Richmond started at $2 but had dropped to $1.83 by game time with the line moving from them giving away a 3-5 point start to 4-5 points. Essendon’s larger wagers include a massive $100,000 to win by minus 8.5 points at $1.95 (Sportsbet.com.au).
Wooden spoon betting has just turned interesting with the Giants’ win against the Suns. Although GWS are still hot favourites for the wooden spoon, according to Centrebet’s Michael Felgate, they started out at $1.83, and are now out to $2 with Gold Coast at $3 and Melbourne following on at $3.50.
According to Betfair’s Daniel Bevan, Geelong’s loss to Adelaide on Saturday has resulted in a shift in their standing in the premiership market, with their odds moving out from $6.40 to $10 and Adelaide moving from a top price of $75 into $16.
Next week’s matches should showcase some mighty clashes which are reflected in some of the current odds. Collingwood v Geelong is likely to be a ripper and sees both teams equally placed at $1.90. Most of the other games don’t show odds quite so close at this time. Port Adelaide ($2.50) v Nth Melbourne ($1.50) should be a close one according to the tipsters but not so much Hawthorn ($1.20) v Fremantle ($4.40), and Sydney ($1.09) v Melbourne ($7). The Bulldogs ($1.25) are currently firm favourites over Gold Coast ($3.85) as is Brisbane ($1.15) over GWS ($5). Essendon ($1.60) v Richmond ($2.30) has some potential, according to the tipsters, for a close and exciting game. Both Carlton ($1.30) v Adelaide ($3.45) and West Coast ($1.30) v St Kilda ($3.45) see the final two games rounded off with the same odds.
When it comes to betting for the flag, the odds, as they currently stand, Hawthorn sitting in top spot at $4.50 followed by Carlton who lost last night to the Saints at 5.50. West Coast at $6, the Pies at $7 and Geelong at $9. Essendon’s recent fine form sees them placed at $11. Both Adelaide and Sydney are sitting at $17, Fremantle is currently at $26 and, following on equally at $34, are St Kilda and Richmond.
Brownlow betting still has Collingwood star Scott Pendlebury as the favourite at $6 followed closely by Carlton’s Marc Murphy at $7. Sydney’s Josh Kennedy is sitting pretty at $8 and Gold Coast‘s Gary Ablett is at $9 with Dane Swan keeping the Pies well represented at $13 and Sam Mitchell of Hawthorn at $15.
The Coleman Medal bets have Lance Franklin of Hawthorn as the one to watch at $3. Adelaide’s Taylor Walker is at $7 followed closely by Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt at $9 and the Pies’ Travis Cloke at $11. Geelong is well represented for the Coleman with Tom Hawkins at $13 and James Podsiadly also in the running at $15.
