Former St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has expressed an interest in the Carlton head coaching job and has revealed he has rebuffed an approach from Collingwood.
Key points:
- Ross Lyon is eyeing David Teague’s job at Carlton
- Teague is under pressure after his side failed to make the finals
- Lyon also revealed the things about Collingwood he sees as “red flags”
Carlton is currently preparing a report into its football club, and some believe current coach David Teague will be moved on amid intense media scrutiny.
Teague’s manager Liam Pickering earlier this week described recent reports about his client as “a vicious, deliberate and nasty attack on a young coach” as well as a “disgrace” and “absolutely disgusting”.
On Channel Nine on Wednesday night, Lyon said it was important to “aim not to injure David Teague”.
Moments later, he declared he wanted Teague’s job.
“If an opportunity arose, and I say that with the greatest of respect for Carlton, and they rang me, I would entertain it,” he said.
“But I also understand I haven’t got tickets on myself, it’s a red hot field, [outgoing Hawks coach] Alastair Clarkson is available.”
Lyon also said he had rebuffed an approach from Collingwood about that club’s head coaching vacancy.

Pies legend Nathan Buckley stood down from his post earlier this year and the club is still looking to make a long-term appointment.
Lyon said he had spoken to Collingwood general manager of football Graham Wright.
“Graham reached out to a friend to get my number … I said respectfully I wouldn’t entertain that for a variety of reasons,” he said.
“Ultimately I think successful clubs … have got alignment of where they’re at and where they’re going, and if you see misalignment it’s a red flag.”
Collingwood has several players on its list with fathers who also played for the club, including Darcy Moore and Will Kelly.
The club has also recently had a change in president. Media personality Eddie McGuire departed in the aftermath of a report that found systemic racism at the club.
