Michael Voss’s Blues coaching staff takes shape with key appointment

Aaron Hamill has joined Carlton as the club’s backline coach in Michael Voss’s first major appointment since taking over the head coaching role.

Key points:

  • Hamill has previously worked as an assistant coach with St Kilda
  • He played over 90 matches for Carlton
  • Voss was appointed Blues head coach last week

Hamill started his playing career at Carlton, making 92 senior appearances at the Blues before adding another 98 matches with St Kilda.

The 44-year-old has spent the past 10 years performing various roles in St Kilda’s coaching set-up, including a two-year stint as coach of the Saints’ VFL affiliate Sandringham.

Hamill was promoted to senior assistant in 2020, overseeing the backline and team defence as the Saints made the finals for the first time since 2011.

“My approach to coaching has been pretty simple over the last 10 years, maintain high standards and high accountability,” Hamill said in a statement.

“I have a real passion to work with and develop players and with where this group is at right now and the path they are looking to take — it is going to be a great environment to be part of.”

Voss was appointed as Carlton senior coach a week ago after the Blues sacked David Teague.

A broom was also swept through the assistant coaches at Carlton during and after the 2021 season.

Senior assistant John Barker departed in June, while Brent Stanton and Dale Amos were let go along with Teague.

Cameron Bruce moved onto the Brisbane Lions.

Cain Liddle left as Carlton chief executive shortly after the season finished and was replaced by former Geelong boss Brian Cook.

Carlton has not played in the finals since 2013 and the pressure will be on Voss to guide the club to September action in his first year.

The Blues are set to be bolstered by the arrival of Fremantle star Adam Cerra, who has requested a trade to Carlton.
